Field Studio

2026 · WebGL · Web Audio · Electron · Ongoing

A local audiovisual generator, editor and performance surface. A field in the middle, its visual controls on the left, its music on the right, a timeline and live controls below. It began as a supporting tool for entrancing visuals for a jigsaw puzzle game, the one that became Perpetuity, and then developed into audiovisual pieces of its own.

Field Studio: a colour field in the centre, visual controls on the left, music on the right, the timeline below
The shape, count, arrangement and symmetry controls

A composition is built from a small set of controls: a shape, how many of it, how they are arranged and what symmetry they follow, then colour, motion and finish. Reroll generates a new one, and every value can be edited by hand.

The picture and the music are separate procedural engines joined by connections you can edit. Phrases breathe the shape spacing, melody entrances lift the colour and pulse entrances nudge the field's warp, with one strength control over all of it. No generative AI chooses a note at runtime.

The timeline: three compositions overlapping, joined by transformers

Make one composition, make another, connect them, and the transformer plays the movement from one to the other. It renders PNG, WAV and WebM at a chosen resolution, up to 8192 × 1112 for an ultrawide screen.

Ten musical relationship dials, from Sparse to Bustling and Ominous to Hopeful
The sound family picker

Live, ten musical relationship dials reshape a four-part composer of melody, harmony, bass and pulse, and the changes enter every four beats. Five sound families swap the ensemble playing it: Wood & String, Felt & Tine, Bowed Air, Tape Circuit and Neon Keys.

I have made two pieces with it so far: Android Dreams, a one-minute film, and Electric Dreams, an 8192 × 1112 ultrawide. The moving images on this page are rendered from those two projects.

Conceptually the whole piece is about the aesthetics of interconnected responsiveness. That is why the music originates from the same view as the picture.
